Your baby needs to learn to get to sleep independently as young as possible so that they can eventually sleep through the whole night alone later in life. There’s no written age when this will happen, however there are measures which can be taken to assist them with this. Here are 3 steps to help your baby sleep independently.

Sleep Associations

One thing you will find is your baby will have things which they associate with sleep. Whether this be being rocked, or being held in your arms. These are the things that your baby associates with going to sleep. The step to helping your baby sleep independently is to begin to make these associations be ones which are when they’re on their own in their cot.

Set Routines

Consistency is a key to helping your baby sleep on their own. Like anyone in the world, it takes time to learn something new. It’s important to get them into a routine so that they almost know when it’s time for sleep. As an example, you could bathe them, the get them into their pajamas and then put them in their cot for sleep. By doing this on a regular basis you can quickly help them understand when bedtime is.

During The Night

If your baby wakes up during the night, try and wait for a couple of minutes before going into them. While this is going to seem cruel as they cry, it can help them learn how to get back to sleep independently. If after a while they still haven’t fallen back to sleep, go and offer them comfort such as speaking to them quietly. Though, try not to pick them up or rock them to back to sleep. It’s a very important step to helping them sleep on their own without you..
